Form Bloodstock purchases dominated feature race action at Greyville on Saturday.
Meryl, a R450 000 buy at last year’s National Yearling Sale, made it two wins from three outings when landing the Listed Devon Air Stakes for owners Rachel Slack and Mauritzfontein, while the day’s major feature race, the G1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge went the way of Captain America –a R400 000 buy at the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Meryl is a daughter of the Form Bloodstock imported sire Tiger Ridge and the G3 placed Fort Wood mare Rose Lipped Maiden.
The Varsfontein Stud bred Captain America, a third G1 winner in a week for trainer Brett Crawford, took his earnings past the R4.7 million mark with his 1.5 length win in Saturday’s R1 000 000 contest.
It was a second G1 win for the six-year-old, who had previously landed the G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes back in 2015.
By champion sire Captain Al, Captain America is also out of a stakes placed Fort Wood mare-Requista.
